Tonight I got to experience one of those rare occasions. Literally, the cosmos met and I had a very special night. My mom agreed to watch my two young children and my brother invited me to this jam band event on the beach (yes, the beach at a lake in northern New Jersey- Jersey is filled with hidden gems- it IS the garden state after all) where his brother-in-law, Pete, was playing. Thunder storms were predicted. But we were saved. Kind of. This was the best part… You could literally see the storm clouds out in the distance ominous with their lightening bolts as the band played on. It was. Spectacular. I wish you were all there. Next time. Jam on. Click here to see what I’m talking about: IMG_9829
So super fun. They take a lot of work, but they are well worth it. The moms come together, making side dishes, and to kvetch while the dads awkwardly BBQ the proteins and turn and turn the patties. It’s a community building event where families connect, children play (and scream and fight) while breaking bread and chicken legs. Summer and BBQs really go hand in hand in my family. You can’t have one without the other… Corn on the cob, macaroni salad, coleslaw, and insert protein- pulled pork, dogs + burgers, or chicken slathered in your favorite saucy sauce. Maybe throw in something green to make yourself feel a little better about life: a salad or some broccoli and tell those kiddies to “eat their trees!” Or not. Small or large events, they always have their place in my heart. Happy flipping- burgers and the bird!

If I know anything about my body, it’s that is in constantly changing. I guess Newton knew a thing or two about an object in motion… but did he take into account gravity? Gravity is some serious shit. Just when I think I’m ok and settled with the way “things” have become and hung differently, they change! That’s not to say it’s all bad. After a baby or two, sometimes things slide back into a reminiscent state of the original. Mostly not. Mostly gravity ravages my body and turns parts of it into something unrecognizable. To me, anyway. And then, I realize that none of it really matters. I mean, REALLY matters. Sure, I look in the mirror and poke and prod at different parts that used to look better. Of course. But then, I realize that I can go to the gym, lift heavier, drink more water, spend more time on accessory work, eat cleaner using the best nutritional program out there, and make a much bigger difference than gravity. I can’t reverse the aging process but I can fight it tooth and nail. And I can do my best to be my best. Be your best self.
Why does it never end? I wish there were a bedtime fairy that swooped in and touched each of my children’s heads with her magic weary wand that made them instantly sleepy… oh to dream…
